Dont Die the Death of a Fool

0

A friend shared a really good example of why it is foolish to not take precautions against dangers.

2 Samuel 3 sees Joab call Abner to the "midst of the gates" of Hebron and kill him.

Abner had killed Joab's brother Asahel back in 2 Samuel 2, which is an interesting story in itself. So there was obvious motive and justification for his act of vengeance.

However
Hebron was a city of refuge in which Abner would have been safe, remember he was standing between the gates; a few mere feet further and he would not have had the death of a fool as King David calls it (vs 33).

I believe God is sovereign and Abner would have been killed, but he died as a fool dies because he did not avail himself of the safety of Hebron, a city of refuge.

If we dont take precautions from danger (Abner knew Joab wanted to kill him) and we die its the death of a fool.

This doesnt mean we avoid danger like a coward not trusting God, just that we take precautions and tread wisely.

It's why we wear helmets on our bikes, seatbelts in our cars and life jackets on a boat. It's why we use ropes for climbing and have smoke alarms fitted to our house, and it's why we step 2 meters away from each other and wash our hands regularly.

Let's not have our death put down as the death of a fool...
