Do This And Remember - An Evening Devotion with the Kids turned into Something Else . . .

Last night at the kitchen table while Jake ate his supper of wheaten bread with jam, and Faith ate her rice krispies i read from Matthew 6:1-14. When i finished reading and explaining as well as answering some questions, i was thinking i'll let them finish eating and then we'll all pray together and i'll get these rascals off too bed before I dive into Insanity. But Jake had other ideas.

He proceeded to say he knew a great way to remember how Jesus had saved us, and before i could speak had lifted his wheaten, broke it with a declaration that "the broken bread was to remind us of Jesus' body broken for us", and handed both Faith and myself a piece. What was i to do but eat?

Then he lifted his drinker and said "this erm, blackcurrant reminds us of Jesus blood that poured out to save us from our sins". He took a sip, passed it to me, i sipped and passed to Faith. I mean what else could i do?

I know some would say a 6 year old shouldn't be doing this and i shouldn't have entertained him in it, nor passed it on to a 3 year old. And you may be right. But at the time i was in daddy mode and loving it, his earnest sincerity and determination to remember Jesus in this way was surprising and astonishing. My heart cried out to my Heavenly Father that Jake will grow up and point many people to Jesus, both reminding the believer and leading the lost. That he will be used by God to bring many in to celebrate around the Lord's table.
