Why Are We Proud of Others?

2
Me: 'I'm really proud of you!'

Jacob: 'Because i didn't wet my *jocks?'

Me: 'No, just proud of you because you are . . . my son . . . proud of you because you are Jacob!'

Jacob: 'You're proud of me because i'm Jacob?'
He looked puzzled for a minute before his face lit up and throwing his arms around me he repeated (a number of times) 'You're proud of me because i'm Jacob'. He then whispered in my ear; 'Dad; i love you so so so so so so so so so so so so much.'

As Jacob fell asleep with his arms around me and the word 'much' trailing from his lips, tears rolled down my cheeks and i thanked God in that moment for His goodness in & towards my family.

Sometimes i wonder if we tell our family (especially our kids) that we are proud of them and love them for who they are, not just because of their accomplishments or even goodness toward us.

*We've had a bit of a battle in the area of wet jocks recently. But thanks to stars a helicopter and telling him how proud we are when he doesn't wet them the battle seems won.
