Reading the Bible is one of the disciplines of the Christian life that i am persuaded is key to Christian living. Here are some reasons why:
Scripture comes from the very mouth of God, training and equipping His people.
All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be competent, equipped for every good work.
(2 Timothy 3:16-17 ESV)
Scripture is a living, active sword.
For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.
(Hebrews 4:12 ESV)
Scripture saves us, & reveals God's righteousness to us.
. . . for it (The Gospel) is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith, as it is written, “The righteous shall live by faith.”
(Romans 1:16-17 ESV)
Scripture sanctifies us.
Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth.
(John 17:17 ESV)
Scripture is All about Jesus.
And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he interpreted to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself.
(Luke 24:27 ESV)
Scripture should possess us.
Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly. . .
(Colossians 3:16 ESV)
Scripture is to be obeyed.
But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.
(James 1:22 ESV)
Scripture carries us through affliction & suffering.
If your law had not been my delight, I would have perished in my affliction.
(Psalm 119:92 ESV)
Scripture is to be meditated upon.
This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it.
(Joshua 1:8 ESV)
Scripture is the means by which we receive the filling of The Spirit.
Does he who supplies the Spirit to you and works miracles among you do so by works of the law, or by hearing with faith?
(Galatians 3:5 ESV)
In coming weeks i intend to explore these (and more) a little further.
