I recently read a facebook discussion in which some Bible verses were being used. These verses, standing alone seemed an impressive argument, but when the context around them, and the overall teachings of Scripture were applied, they weren't quite so applicable to the discussion.
How often we do this; picking up the parts that suit us and forget the 'whole'!
We really need to have a basic grasp of the whole Bible so that we can understand smaller sections in the greater light. Perhaps we should create a word play on many of our Bibles so that they say 'Whole Bible' on the cover.
Sure 'stand-alone-verses may win an argument, but do we want to risk mishandling the Word of Truth?
