Why Bother To Read Old, Hard Books?

In his introduction to John Bunyan's 'The Acceptable Sacrifice' Donald S. Whitney says the following:

"If you aren't accustomed to reading older, classic books, think of it as digging for diamonds in a mine proven to be full of them. The reward will be well worth the effort."
