Glory of God, Ugly Tree, Sinful Me

5
The other night I walked down my road,
Looking at the beautiful night.
I turned my gaze down, where behold,
A tree stood, an ugly sight.

This tree was twisted & gnarled,
Its branches were ugly & rotting.
'There's no glory in that tree' my mind snarled,
But I stood for moment; staring & thinking.

What is man that You are mindful of him?
My sin has made me worse than that tree.
I'm wretched, a rebel, full of sin,
A worse state than that tree could ever be.

I deserve wrath, separation from the Almighty,
To be consumed like nothing but chaff.
But God sent His Son to die on a tree,
Made Him who knew no sin, sin on my behalf.

That tree that I thought was ugly indeed,
pointed my mind back to the Gospel.
So there is it's glory; it planted, thoughtful seed,
In my mind, and helping me, in the Cross to revel.

I walked past that tree again tonight,
Its gnarls & twists bringing back this thought.
That tree has more glory than can be seen with sight,
It points to my sin, & the One who must be sought.

[I'm not poetic, but my mind kept thinking about this, & I thought i'd make a small (even if poor) attempt at being a bit creative. I know the flow changes as you read it but hey; change is good!]

That's awesome Boaly!

I'm not poetic either so I have no idea what constitutes a good poem but in my opinion, yours is great!

Thanks for sharing.

Thanks Boaly.

On that subject... someone told me recently that I have the gift of encouragement. It's not true though.

People with the gift of encouragement know what to say even in the difficult times. I NEVER know what to say.

I know I don't have the gift of encouragement but I also know that encouraging one another is an important part of Church life. So I try. I try to encourage people as often as I can.

If anyone reads this... you can do it too and it's amazing what just saying something nice to someone can do for their motivation, their drive, their self belief and their self worth.

Just don't lie. They'll see through it in a heartbeat!

So true Peter, brilliant advice! Thanks!
Sometimes it seems that when people don't have a certian gift they think they are excused from the pratice of it. Yet we are all called to do all of the gifts.
I used the iluustration (when i taught through the gifts a few years ago) that if someone comes to ask how they can be saved, we don't just turn and say, go see the evangelist, that's not my gift.

Or if a child asks its dad for food, they don't say 'well go see your mum, i dont have the gift of hospitality'

Rather we 'do' all the gifts, not just the prominent ones in our life. (if that makes sense)
