"Before my conversion I worked towards the cross, but since then I have worked from the cross; then I worked to be saved, now I work because I am saved."
D.L. Moody
Here Moody is describing the difference between his 'good works' before becoming a Christian & after. But the phrase that captivated me as I read this was; '
but since then I have worked from the cross'.
In contemplating this working 'from' the cross I found myself wandering to Galatians 3 & of how easy it is for us Christians to fall into the old pattern of working in the flesh, apart from the cross or of a mindset of working for position with God.
I don't think I need to explain this too much, I think if we're all honest, we'll hold our hands up to having struggled with this mindset at some stage.
For me, I keep having to refresh my mind that Christ has done the work of redemption, and will perfect it until the day of Christ (Phil 1:6), and that my works do not earn favour or position with God. Christ has already sorted that out on my behalf by living a righteous life and dying a cruel death taking the punishment for my sin.
Rather all my (our) works should flow from the cross, being rooted and having their origins in those words "It is Finished", working, serving, worshipping etc because I (we) have been saved!
