Five Books For New Believers

6

@inspireBG and i were discussing which five books we'd choose if we were giving them to a new believer.
I'm still struggling with my 5.

Out of interest, which 5 books would you give?

1. I suppose for a new believer I want them in the Bible quickly, so something road-map wise for that. Tim Chester or Vaughan Robert's Bible Overviews perhaps.

2. I want them to know God wants t heir heart - so I might point them to Richard Sibbes' Glorious Freedom (a puritan version of Piper's God is the Gospel). I want them really clear on grace vs. legalism, so amybe Terry Virgo's God's Lavish Grace.

3. I think a bit of their history would be good to know so something like Mike Reeves The Unquenchable Flame, or a missionary biography.

4. I want them to think about evangelism how to do that well - Randy Newman's Questioning Evangelism...

5. I want them to see all of their life matters, so probably Julian Hardyman's Maximum Life would be useful. Or something else around how to be a Christian at work and play etc.

A Great 5 (i like how you sneakily got a 6th one in) and i can't believe how quickly you got that list together Dave.

(I hadn't even thought of putting any history in.)

Great question, Gary. It seems important to me to know beforehand if the person is a reader. If not, there's no way I'd recommend many of the books that have helped me so much. The last thing I would want to do is recommend something that would take them away from scripture. So, here's my list assuming they're not a big reader:

1. Read the gospels, and I'd recommend starting with Mark or John

2. Read John MacArthur's Gospel According to Jesus or the Murder of Jesus

3. Greg Gilbert's What is the Gospel

4. Max Lucado's Just Like Jesus

5. John Piper's God is the Gospel

Another great list, both Simon (@inspireBG) & myself had MacArthur's 'You Call Me Lord' down as we discussed it the other night. As far as i know its an edition of The Gospel According to Jesus. Great book

1. The Bible (i don't think that our culture lends itself to assuming everyone has a Bible)

2. Can I trust the Bible by Sproul or Why I trust the Bible by MacArthur (I want people to know that they can the Bible.

3. Something like The stranger on the Road to Emmaus by Cross or God's Big Picture by Roberts (These serve as great overviews of Scripture and follow main threads such as that of redemption).

4. You Call Me Lord by MacArthur or the shorter leaflet 'A Letter to a friend by Piper. (I want the Gospel to be clear)

5. The Secret Key to Heaven by Brooks (I want people to be excited about and hopeful in prayer).

As well as the Bible my five would be, in alphabetical order:

1. Christ Empowered Living, Selwyn Hughes

2. Doctrine, Mark Driscoll

3. Knowing God, J. I. Packer

4. Life in the Fathers House, Wayne Mack & David Swavely

5. The Grace Awakening, Charles Swindoll
