Barbara & i were reading Ephesians 6 tonight when a thought occurred to me about the armor that Paul tells us to put on.
The belt of truth
Jesus is the way the truth and the life (John 14:6). Jesus is the belt of truth.
The breastplate of righteousness
Our righteousness is in Jesus (2 Corinthians 5:21). Jesus is the breastplate of righteousness.
As shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace
The gospel (good news) is that we have peace with God through Jesus. It is this gospel of Jesus that brings readiness.
The shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one
Faith in itself is not the shield since people place faith in various things. The object of our faith; Jesus, is that shield that extinguishes the flaming darts of the evil one.
The helmet of salvation
Salvation is through Jesus (1 Thessalonians 5:9), Jesus is the helmet of salvation.
The sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God
The word of God (the Bible) is also described as being the word of Christ (Colossians 3:16). It is Jesus' word that the Spirit takes up as a sword.
I guess Romans 13:14 could be used to sum this thought up; "Put on the Lord Jesus Christ". He is that truthful breastplate of righteousness who makes us ready through the Gospel of peace and shields us from the fiery darts of the evil one. He is our helmet of salvation and His word is the Sword which is wielded by His Spirit. Jesus is the armor, it is in Him that we are able to stand against the devil.
In Jesus we stand firm.
