5 Anglican bishops have resigned in a move from anglican to roman catholic church.
One of the reasons for this departure was "a growing divide between Catholics and Anglicans and their distress at developments in the Anglican Church, which they find "incompatible" with its historic vocation and tradition."
This divide revolves around "the ordination of women and practicing homosexuals as bishops."
While i respect their reasons for both protest and resignation from their church because of its move away from its 'historic vocation and tradition' i would point to greater and clearer reasons found in the Bible.
Without getting into the ins-and-outs of it, (and while i'm only going by a couple of articles & may be mistaken) it would seem that this move has more to do with beliefs and values shaped by tradition, rather than beliefs and values rooted in Scripture.
While Scripture does have a lot to say about these issues, much that would indeed be a solid basis for disagreement on these areas, there seems to be a silence from these bishops regarding what God says.
*Perhaps that's because Scripture would take them in a different direction than the one they are currently pursuing?
This raises an important issue:
If our belief on christian living & church practice is not shaped by Scripture, then regardless of how 'right' we may be on a given subject we have missed the mark.
Our (Christian) foundations of practice and faith, right and wrong, rest solely in the Bible. If that authoritative view of the rock of Scripture is missing, and instead we rely upon traditions, we are building a house upon a sandy beach.
*While there are many differences between the catholic church and the reformed faith, a blog post cannot enter this debate sufficiently nor fairly. So i decided to focus on the neglect (at least in this article) of any Scriptural reasons for leaving the anglican church. (Having said that i am convinced that the Bible would direct towards the reformed faith and not the catholic religion.)
