Thoughts Provoked by the Call to Protect & Fight For Unionist Culture

1
Unionist Politicians, unionist voters and many N.Ireland Christians talk about the need to protect and fight for our culture, traditions and heritage. Here's some quick thoughts:

  • The culture and traditions we hold so dearly will either fade out & become history, or be consumed at Jesus' return. We need to hold them loosely

  • The culture and traditions we hold so dearly may become a distraction from Jesus, at worst they may be an enemy of Jesus.

  • The culture and traditions we hold so dearly, although they may be good and enjoyable, are probably not Biblical and therefore should not be held of much value compared to Kingdom living.

  • The culture and traditions we hold so dearly will be brought up in judgement against us. Lets live for something of eternal weight!

  • The culture and traditions we hold so dearly may be a stumbling block, that we need to set aside so that others may come in liberty to Jesus.

Like us, the Jews, (and the Greeks) were, and still are, proud of their history, heritage, culture & traditions. Yet Paul wrote about Christianity:
"There is neither Jew nor Greek . . .   . . . for you are all one in Christ Jesus" [Galatians 3:28]

It wasn't simply the cultural, traditional & historical 'divides' that were to be left behind, but seemingly a complete change of identity; as you went from being 'Jew' or 'Gentile' to being a 'Christian'.

The old cultural jerseys get cast aside and we put on Christ, who is our life!

*Don't get me wrong, i fully believe in living within, and engaging with the culture(s) around us for the Gospels sake. I believe that Christians should be involved with politics and in serving the communities in various ways. But i believe this is done for the Glory of God and with our hearts steadfast on things in heaven (where our treasure is)and not in holding things on earth (in this case culture etc) too tightly.
