I think this may be one of the dangers of the so called 'new Calvinism' and resurgence of the reformed, that we're seeing in our day.
I think some questions may help us 'own' our beliefs:
[These are things i have to work my way through]
1. Why do i believe this?
Many things influence our beliefs. Pastors, 'famous' teachers, the historical view, or our peers,or perhaps the belief is fashionable or popular, and these may be right. But primarily, and above all we must have our beliefs rooted in Scripture.
2. What Scriptures spring to mind, without looking at the Bible, that teach this?
Not knowing Scripture for it, or having to go looking may be an indication that we don't really 'own' this belief because of the Bible, but from some other influence.
3. What does an overall view of Scripture teach on this?
Does the majority of Scripture teach this, or something contrary to it?
What Scriptures bridge the gap between seeming contradictions in verses?
Further Contemplation
It may be helpful to ask a friend to write out a list of questions, asking what we believe on certain issues. We can then work our way down the list with an open Bible. We may find this helpful in our growth.
