What Are You Reading & a Couple of Other Questions

4
I love to read.
New, old or very old.
Mostly Christian books that fall into various catagories.

But what about you?
  • What are you currently reading?
  • Why are you reading it?
  • What books have you read that you've declared: "every one should read this?"
  • What factors encourage you to buy, borrow or *steal a book?

*Steal - I threw this in because quite often borrowing turns into stealing.

What are you currently reading?
I just finished Jerry Bridges' Pursuit of Holiness and have started John MacArthur's The Murder of Jesus. On the side, I'm re-reading Frank Peretti's This Present Darkness.
Why are you reading it? The first I read to encourage and challenge me in my growth toward holiness. The second: I had read excerpts a few years ago and was quite intrigued. I chose both for this time of the year due to Lent. The third: I like to keep a novel going (something more enjoyable/pleasurable and easier to read at bedtime) - this one I read about 13 years ago and did a lot to open my eyes to how spiritual battles might be happening. It's a great book centered around prayer and spiritual forces.
What books have you read that you've declared: "every one should read this?" - I'll assume you mean outside the Bible - Desiring God and The Pleasures of God both by John Piper, and I know the next two might be quite a switch, but Brennan Manning's books: The Ragamuffin Gospel and Abba's Child went a HUGE way in opening my heart and mind to God's loving, tender, merciful, forgiving and gracious way with his children. J. I. Packer's Knowing God is definitely a must-read.
What factors encourage you to buy, borrow or *steal a book? I don't like to borrow for too often I keep it WAY too long. Also, I like to buy my books because I read books (except novels, usually) with book in left hand and pencil in right hand. I take notes, underline, and mark in the margins often when I'm reading. I have no problem buying books second-hand and do so often.

I am reading several:
A bio on St. Patrick and the latest by Ted Dekker because I agreed to review them.
True Spirituality by Francis Schaeffer, According to Plan by Goldsworthy, and Total Church by Timmis because it is for my church.

John Stott's the Cross of Christ was my Christmas gift, and it is waiting in the wings.

I'm reading Precious Blood which is edited by Richard D. Phillips (really recommend this one!)I'm reading it as part of my prep for Easter. Will read Don Carsons Scandalous when I'm done - for same reason.

Also reading Comeback Churches by Ed Stetzer. Reading it because I care a lot about church becoming more missional while remaining biblically faithful and I want to be constantly challenged towards that end.

Also reading Why We Love The Church, reading it because I love the Church too and because I like Kevin De Young.

Book that spring to mind that I think everyone should read mmm. Francis Chans Crazy Love, Pipers Don't Waste Your Life, Tim Kellers The Prodigal God, anything by Lloyd-Jones and Tozer, Driscolls Death By Love, Jack Deeres Suprised by the Power of the Spirit, Mahaneys True Humility, De Youngs Just Do Something to name a few haha

Factor that encourage me to buy a book. Do writers and christians I respect recommend it, is it Bible-based, will it fuel my passion for God, will it warm my heart and stretch mind to know Christ more and become more like him, does the author glory in the death and resurrection of Jesus...

Thanks guys for your comments. Got a few books to stick on my list of 'to get'

John, i'm reading 'Precious Blood' at the minute aswell. Excellent book and i'll second your recommendation.

Brian 'The Murder of Jesus' has been one of the most affecting books i've read about the cross. Trust you're blessed by it!

Don, The Cross of Christ - wow, you'll love it.
