A Beautiful Thing

1

"And while he was at Bethany in the house of Simon the leper, as he was reclining at table, a woman came with an alabaster flask of ointment of pure nard, very costly, and she broke the flask and poured it over his head.
There were some who said to themselves indignantly, “Why was the ointment wasted like that? For this ointment could have been sold for more than three hundred denarii and given to the poor.” And they scolded her.
But Jesus said, “Leave her alone. Why do you trouble her? She has done a beautiful thing to me."

Mark 14:3-6 (emphasis added)

Yesterday, dealing with this text, David Dunlop* drew out a question about our worship, asking if sees a beautiful thing when He looks at our worship?

David proposed that it wasn't so much to do with style; loud or quiet, traditional or modern etc. But primarily an issue of the heart's intent & our motive behind the worship.

This woman is an example of extravagant & sacrificial worship; critics complained but Jesus accepted it & delighted in it.

"When we worship does Jesus see a beautiful thing?"

*As is usual my notes are not word for word what was said, but contain much of 'me' as i write them. So this may not be an accurate picture of David's message.

Excellent question, Gary. I love this story and all the many applications that may come out of it.
