“I know that the Lord has given you the land . . . . . . For we have heard how the Lord dried up the water of the Red Sea before you when you came out of Egypt, and what you did to the two kings of the Amorites who were beyond the Jordan, to Sihon and Og, whom you devoted to destruction..."
Rahab the harlot - Joshua 2:9-10
Rahab lived in Jericho, a city in which people were gossiping & talking about what was going on with the Israelite nation. People simply saying; 'did you hear what happened...' and 'they say that their God Jehovah is giving them this land'.
Rahab, although a gentile & at that a woman of poor reputation & morals had heard of the LORD and His works for & through Israel in leading them miraculously through the Red Sea, out of Egypt & in defeating their enemies.
She heard all this & believed that this God of Israel was one to fear & obey!
In reading this event in the history of Israel i was struck by the obvious effect of talking about God & His power. These non-christians, as it were had heard what had been happening, it was talked about in the city etc and now faced with the arrival of Israel, Rahab bends her knee & submits herself to the God of this foreign nation.
My main thoughts are simply:
If the news spread by unbelievers could so affect such a woman as Rahab, who by the way is in the genealogy of Jesus. What effect would the constant conversation & telling of the Lord's greatness & works be, when told from the mouth of those who passionately follow & love Him?
And that as the world watches the people of God they will discuss us & God uses this as a testimony of His greatness to them.
