Deuteronomy 13:1-4 & Signs & Wonders?

0
“If a prophet or a dreamer of dreams arises among you and gives you a sign or a wonder, and the sign or wonder that he tells you comes to pass, and if he says, ‘Let us go after other gods,’ which you have not known, ‘and let us serve them,’ you shall not listen to the words of that prophet or that dreamer of dreams. For the Lord your God is testing you, to know whether you love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul. You shall walk after the Lord your God and fear him and keep his commandments and obey his voice, and you shall serve him and hold fast to him. "
Deuteronomy 13:1-4

Some Thoughts

First let me state that I absolutely believe that signs & wonders surround the followers of Jesus Christ & that He gifts, empowers & works in magnificent ways for His Glory. But here are my thoughts from the text:

  • That i must be careful when asking for signs or miracles - what is my motive. The 1st thing i thought of as i read the above was Matthew 16:4 where Jesus describes those who seek for signs as being an evil & adulterous generation.

  • Signs, visions & wonders are not the definitive evidence of a life that is filled with the Spirit of Christ.
  • That above all else i must seek to love God with all my heart & soul, fear Him, Obey Him, serve Him & hold fast to Him.

  • Obedience to God's Word is a higher calling than that of the miraculous, We see this in the above passage when we are told "keep His [God's] commandments and obey his voice".

  • That i need to get to know God's Word better & better so that i can easily discern if a miracle worker is teaching truth or lies. To have verses, passages & references in my mind so that i can safeguard my own heart & obedience of God along with that of my families.

  • That if the Holy Spirit should ever choose to work the miraculous through me, that i do not rely upon that as evidence of my ministry. But that faithfulness to the Truths of God's Word is above all else.

  • That the workers of signs & wonders should/must be theologically informed, much like Jesus was.
