"Nurture them (children) not with worldly wisdom, saying, 'Thou shalt come to honour, dignity, promotion, and riches; thou shalt be better than such and such . . .' and so forth; filling them full of pride, disdain, and ambition, and corrupting their minds with worldly persuasions."
William Tyndale [The Obedience of a Christian Man]
I guess this flies in face of our western mindset which tells us to get ahead at any cost. A mindset that undoubtedly flaws our character and likability, not to mention its tendency to lead us to sin against God.
Raising children is undoubtedly one of the highest and challenging calls upon our lives.
We'll always want to encourage our kids in education and careers, and this is right. But i guess there's a balanced tension in finding a way to encourage them more about Christ than excelling ahead of the rat race.
Oh that we would be very mindful to 'bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord' as Ephesians 6:4 instructs.
