We stood in the airport staring at the screens.
It seemed that every other flight had 'delayed' beside it, yet five minutes before the boarding time, ours was still reading 'please wait'
Not knowing what was happening we just stood in anticipation waiting... and waiting... and waiting to see if we'd be delayed or which gate we needed to get to.
We even resorted to walking from screen to screen around the terminal, in hope that in the time between something would change. Not knowing was annoying!
This was us on last Wednesday in Gatwick airport on our way home from Malta. With the closure of Dublin airport it seemed that the knock on affect was hitting every flight.
Thankfully we were only about 30mins late in departure & landed in Belfast around 9pm - happy days!
But how often do we face our future with concern, anticipation & not a notion what is going on?
We seem to go from one thing to another with anticipation that something will change, or happen in order to make things clear.
I think this is seen in the constant popularity of star signs, tarot cards, fortune tellers and the like, as almost everyone wants some sign or indication that will help their understanding of things to come.
Yet in our stumbling, in our longing for clarity and peace how much do we look in the one place that can bring such clarity to our lives?
God has revealed alot in His Word, telling of things to come and of the most important thing that needs to be made clear to us - Jesus!
All of history, past, present & future revolves around this person. Jesus is the center of the universe & everything centers on Him. To know Him is the most important issue of our lives.
Whether a flight goes on time or not is trivial compared to whether we know Jesus or not, our very future is in His hands as heaven or hell is at stake. Yet how much more we seem to fret over delayed transport, finding a partner or what clothes to wear than we do about knowing Jesus.
It is written "This is eternal life that they know You the only true God, & Jesus Christ whom You have sent" pounding this issue before us, calling us to pay attention!
I wish that I was as constantly staring at Scripture, moving from one verse to another, looking for further knowledge & anticipating further intimacy with Jesus as I had been in that airport with those screens.
