Transformers has been highly awaited in my movie calender, and since cinema going is at an all time low in the Boal household it is with great joy that I met Geoff and Rodney to go and watch it.
The effects in this film are amazing and the action scenes between the Autobots and Decepticons are astonishing! When I got in my car to go home I almost expected it to change shape, hopefully from Micra to Porche, but no such luck!
The story line was pretty good and the humour was good but as I've said the action was outstanding! Though there were some scenes that I thought would have been best omitted. This is a 12A film but pretty much as expected a much younger audience is interested in it and is viewing it. Scenes that focused attention on shapely curves of women and one section that talks needlessly about masturbation in an attempt at humour would have been best forgotten, (I just hope the parents of younger children watching this film are engaging them in conversation about these scenes and how the Scriptures call for sexual purity).
From Christian eyes there were a few moments of engagement and not just to bounce eyes or worry for 5&6 year olds hearing about masturbation, but some moments when my mind was uncontrollably thrown to think of Christ.
The main human character, Sam Witwicky's family motto is spoken time and time again throughout this film; "No sacrifice, No victory" and though I'm not naive enough to think this was put there to reflect it, I couldn't help but think of the Sacrifice of Jesus Christ on the cross and His great victory over satan, sin and death. And Optimus Prime's willingness to sacrifice his life to save the world is undoubtedly going to push a thought towards Jesus!
Having said this and though there is much talk of it there is no real sacrifice given in the movie on any Parr with Jesus!
On further reflection I was thinking of how mankind in this film really only had hope for victory in the help of a much more powerful being than themselves, (human weapons were pretty wick against the decepticons) and how in reality our only hope of victory over sin, satan and deathis found in The greatest and most powerful being in the universe; God!
I also thought a bit about how no one would notice these transformers unless they revealed themselves and how we humans are neglegent and blind to the Glories of Christ unless His Spirit reveals and begins a work in us!
A good action film with amazing special effects and good plot what more could you ask for in a film... (maybe a bit less sexual references)...but an enjoyable film non-the-less!
